Why do speech therapy at home?

If your child struggles to connect with others, has difficulty transitioning into and out of different environments, or is easily distracted by busy places and lots of choices, speech therapy in your home may be just what he or she needs to get started on the journey to effective communication. At home, your child can feel comfortable, regulated, and ready to engage with others. With no new distractions and no pressure to perform in an unfamiliar place, your child and his or her speech therapist can focus on making the connections necessary to move toward strong speech and language skills.

What does a speech therapy session at home look like?

Therapy sessions will look different depending on the needs of the child. But each session will be play-based and child-led. This means instead of working for rewards, we work within play. If we are working on getting some first words in place and your child loves sensory play, our vocabulary will occur naturally in our sensory play. If we are working on speech sounds and your child loves play-doh, we will find the right words to practice that are related to our play. When the work is meaningful in play, it is also meaningful and motivating to the child.

What disabilities or communication disorders do you treat?

I primarily work with children with autism, especially those who are not yet speaking. I use sensory and multimodal communication strategies to improve regulation and create the connections that serve as the foundation for strong communication. I also work with children with speech sound disorders that make their speech harder to understand.
